A Glimpse of Cebu’s Past
Before its discovery by Ferdinand Magellan, Cebu was known as ZUBU or SUGBO, ruled by the Rajahnate of Rajamuda Lumaya. The arrival of the Portuguese explorer Magellan in 1521 established a period of Spanish colonization and global trade.
Cebu became the first European settlement established by the Spanish Cortes. In 1595, the first school in the Philippines was established as University of San Carlos, formerly called Colegio de San Ildefonso. With education, printing, and economic guidance, Cebu soon saw a flourishing of foreign trade.
Cebu’s Economic Transformation
Today, Cebu can boast of a bustling economy, an attractive tourist destination and a business investment. Its infrastructure, educational system and workforce enable it to support major industrial, commercial, and trading activities.
The island has the most domestic air and shipping and cargo vessels in the Philippines which enabled it achieve export growth rates averaging 20% higher than the entire Philippines. Cebu’s extensive international port facilities offer accessibility to Asia and the rest of the world. This has led more than a hundred local firms and multinational companies to establish their offices, factories, and BPO services on the island.
Cebu’s labor force is oriented towards non-agricultural lines and is rated one of the most productive work force in the country.
